Saying Goodbye and Thanks to 2011

In recent years I've been surprised when the end of another year has arrived; usually trying to understand how 12 months passed so quickly, but not 2011. It's been a long, full year and I know exactly where all of my time went.

A year of conscious living and so many lessons, achievements, hardships, changes, blessings and everything in between. I spent a month in Italy to celebrate a big birthday and to make a long time dream become a reality. My month-long Italian residency was only the beginning of all that I would come to realize and the ways in which I would grow. I gained a different perspective of myself, the world, and a greater understanding of my part in it that I'd not fully realized until this year.

2011 was quite a journey. My artwork grew as I grew...

I painted the Serenata series of works that are hands down the best pieces I have ever created. Following the changes in the economy and feeling the effects much like everyone else, I had to come up with ways to make things work, shift, regroup and reinvent ways of continuing my work as a full time artist. My exhibitions were all a success in their own way and my exhibiting galleries and representatives have been such a light for me. My last exhibition for this year was entitled Ebb & Flow - it was a chance for me to help curate and partner with the gallery and the idea for the show mirrored the way in which I was able to follow my path.

My year has been intense and full of personal enlightenment. By Thanksgiving I finally completed my very first coffee table book, another dream of mine I have always longed to make a reality. The response to my work, the celebrations surrounding my exhibitions and the inspiration I have been able to give to others have all made my year one of the richest I can recall. Not every year that is "the best year" means it is necessarily the happiest or the one filled with romance or even lots of excitement. In fact, sometimes it is the darkest times that can show us the brightest light when we look for it. 2011 was a year to grow up in a way that I needed to... a way for me to become more of my authentic self. And that's what made it so special for me. Learning how to be present and nourish myself allowed me to find a new depth in all things. I believe all of this is reflected in my relationships and translates into a journey that many who know me can see as positive change in me as a person and in my work.

My feeling of gratefulness is with me as I write this. My plan for 2012 is to continue on my journey and take the best care of myself and those around me as I can. If I can have another year as fulfilling as this past one, I know I will be heading in the right direction. I also feel a larger responsibility that I need to find as many ways to give back and help the less fortunate as much as I can. My heart breaks every time I hear about animal abuse and I believe it is an important time to take greater care of these animals - this will be where a large part of my donations will go. I believe it is our responsibility to protect and nourish the beautiful things in this world. That includes other people, animals and our natural resources.

With a new year, we are gifted more time to become better versions of ourselves... and a continued chance to make a difference in the world for the better. I pray that I will stay awake and present and conscious so that I may continue to help make this world a better place.

With that I wish you all a very Happy New Year. I hope it is filled with blessings and above all, continued PEACE.

Stellers Gallery at Ponte Vedra to feature four renowned artists in a new group show, Nov. 18

Stellers Gallery at Ponte Vedra will exhibit the new artwork of four renowned artists during the group show, Ebb and Flow. The painters and mixed media artists are to be featured at the opening on Friday, November 18 from 5 pm until 8 pm at Stellers Gallery at Ponte Vedra, 240 A1A North, Ste. 13 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. John Folsom, Jennifer J. L. Jones, Toni John and Wendy McArthur will exhibit new works with a focus on the natural. The artists are all highly collected and exhibited. Each painter complements each other’s talent with a unique visual experience.

John Folsom’s landscapes communicate his unique interpretations with mixed media on panels. His photographic images are designed as a grid and pieced onto each panel. Folsom completes the artwork with oils on the surface and seals each piece with a wax medium.

Jennifer J. L. Jones explores an abstract interpretation of energy and beauty with her artistic meditations on moments of change. Her brilliantly colored, yet subtle luminous finishes are glazed and richly layered as introspective works which are inspired by nature.

Toni John features her abstract paintings in a large format and delves into brilliant colors with an extensive use of silver and gold leaf powder. Her work is influenced by Byzantine and Near Eastern art. Her work reflects a complexity of beauty and a celebration of earthly and celestial subjects.

Wendy McArthur exhibits art that features rich layers of paint and glaze depicting the tranquility of lone boats and bicycles. Her shapes and blocks of color are large on the canvas with refined sketching and brushwork along with radiant hues from her personally crafted ground pigments.

Cumberland Island

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to take a couple of days to get to the shoreline... and take a ferry over to an unspoiled island as well. These are a few of the images from that trip and that are inspiring new works in the studio now. This fall one of my shows is "Ebb & Flow"... which is perfect for these water shots to base paintings on. Should be fun to see how they transform & flow over the coming weeks/months.

Base hits and double plays were Jeff Blauser’s bread and butter for more than 10 years as a major leaguer for the Atlanta Braves. Who knew the shortstop had a keen eye for architecture and design as well?

Now retired from playing professional baseball, Jeff and his wife, Andee, drafted their own team--architects, designers, artisans, and a contractor--to build a new home in the Atlanta area. The couple and their two children, Abbie, 11, and Cooper, 8, needed space to spread out, but building big wasn’t the overriding goal. Instead, Jeff and Andee favored a flowing floor plan with a great room, kitchen, and loggia on the back of the house that see as much action as a pitcher’s mound. Kids’ pool parties and sleepovers, family dinners and impromptu gatherings on the loggia are the norm at the Blauser house. Interiors are a graceful blend of Southern elegance and down-home Southern hospitality, reflecting Andee’s Louisiana upbringing.

“I love the beauty of neutrals,” says Andee, who warmed to a dreamy backdrop of cream and taupe, with blue and chocolate accents. Elegance was key, but so were furnishings that would perform. Antique beams, oiled wood floors, and nubby fabrics tone down any pretense of dressiness and are virtually indestructible. “Both Jeff and I love antiques, so we wanted to go that route,” says Andee. “We also mixed in new things because it makes rooms unique and more interesting. We don’t want to look like everyone else.”

Atlanta designers Heather Dewberry and Will Huff hit the antiques markets and shops with Andee in search of furnishings that were the right mix of comfort and style. “They wanted a home that was great for entertaining and would also feel cozy when it was just the four of them,” Dewberry says. Both Jeff and Andee weighed in on design decisions, and Andee, in particular, “had to really love something before they bought,” the designer adds.

The same held true for the architecture, with the Blausers taking a couple of years to finalize house plans. “They wanted an English manor-style home, but they also wanted it to be open and contemporary inside,” says Bill Harrison, who designed the house with fellow architect Bulent Baydar. Triple gables across the front pay homage to the English style, while huge bay windows ensure interiors are flooded with light.

“That’s one of the trends we’re seeing,” adds Baydar. “People want the look of an old home on the outside, but inside they want lighter spaces with lots of windows, less trim, and clean lines.” Per Jeff’s request, interior trim and architectural details are restrained. “Jeff wanted clean lines, minimal trim, nothing fussy,” Baydar says.

The open floor plan is centered on a spacious stair hall that flows to the great room, kitchen, and a loggia. French doors topped with transoms and gabled windows cut into the kitchen’s vaulted ceiling fill the rooms with light. Antique ceiling beams and trim around some doorways ground the rooms, adding warmth and character. “These are very fluid spaces, and the house almost feels contemporary, but it is brought back to traditional with the natural beams, the wood trim, and, of course, the furnishings,” Harrison says. A pair of sculptural chaises and a chocolate brown sofa in the great room allow for comfortable television viewing without blocking the French doors. “

As you walk in the front door, you see right into the great room,” says Dewberry. “We didn’t want to block the views from those glass doors with sofas.”

While the chaises were custom-made to fit Jeff’s 6-foot-1-inch frame, “the kids have totally claimed them,” Andee says. Fortunately, the designers covered them with a durable chenille basket-weave fabric. “This is a high-traffic room, so we made sure fabrics would perform.” A center coffee table/ottoman wears easy-care Ultrasuede. “You can spill anything on it and wipe it off,” Dewberry says.

A multiarm Italian chandelier hangs above the ottoman and balances the large room without dominating it. “We all fell in love with that chandelier,” Huff remembers. “It’s open and elegant and just what the room needed.”

Activities spill from the great room into the showstopper kitchen, with a ceiling that soars to 24 feet. Counter bar stools and a charming scalloped high-back banquette in the family dining area allow for plenty of seating for daily meals and when the family entertains. “The square-to-round table is great when we have extra people,” Andee says. “We can just open the leaves on the four sides and pull up a few more chairs.”

Atlanta kitchen designer Beth Barfield maximized limited wall space for cabinets with a tall, pull-out pantry beside the range and countertop-level cabinets with flip-up doors for storing small appliances. Cabinets are painted a soft blue-gray, a palette repeated throughout the house; corner cabinets are fitted with leaded mercury-glass fronts. A scallop-topped marble backsplash on the sink wall, curvaceous candle-style sconces, and graceful chandeliers give the space a dressy feel without being overly formal. “We’re definitely not over-the-top-type people,” Andee says.

Proving that, the Blausers spend much of their time on the loggia off the kitchen. With soft seating, outdoor draperies, a fireplace, and a television, “the loggia is Jeff’s favorite room,” Andee reports. Friends often drop by with the greeting, “Is it loggia time?” she adds. “In the summer, we have the fans going, and when it’s cool, we light the fire and close the outdoor curtains. It’s really cozy.” A home run, whatever the season.

Her Authentic Self

Atlanta-based artist, Jennifer J L Jones, sits down to answer a few questions outside her studio. Over coffee & bagels, she laughs about the ups and downs of living in a villa in the Italian countryside, what inspires her work, and where she plans to journey next (perhaps without ever leaving the studio.)

VK: Do you have a ritual before beginning to paint?
JJLJ: No, but my work depends on my energy level. I am very aware of how I am feeling so I will, sometimes, briefly meditate allowing me to go inward and tap into my energy, helping me to discover what I am going to paint.
VK: Do you listen to music or have a playlist that helps you?
JJLJ: I do create a new playlist for each series I am working on and I sometimes put it on my blog. The music is all mood oriented and very eclectic. There are few things I don’t listen to. Well, I don’t listen to speed metal (she laughs), but I listen to everything from Opera to Rap – it all depends on the energy that I am wanting for the series that I’m working on.
My Serenata series, which will span the duration of the year, has a broad array of songs, a few of which are:
Let Him Fly – Patti Griffin (about letting go)
Claire de Lune – Debussy (it’s soooo pretty)
Stay or Leave – Dave Matthews Band (the lyrics are delish)
The music, so far, has evolved as my mood changes. If I feel like it’s getting too weepy, I will change it and listen to something more playful. In talking about it, I realize that the words of the songs are very important and evident in the work. If you listen to the songs, you’ll hear a similar theme that exists in the paintings: seeking, finding and letting go.
VK: Why the concept of ‘letting go’?
JJLJ: It is very personal; it’s where I am in my life. About liberating myself from unrealistic fantasies – letting go of the old notions that are not working to then allow me to embrace things that will work. It’s an act of self-discovery. The cheesy term of finding yourself and thereby coming to know yourself, a desire to make yourself happy from the inside and listen to your inner muse.
VK: As you embark on this journey of self-discovery, do you think your painting allows you to travel (without ever leaving the studio)?
JJLJ: I come from a family of travelers and viewers have told me that they feel like they’ve been to these places (that I paint), but they cannot orient themselves at a specific location. Perhaps this is what they connect with – the notion of embarking on a journey through the paintings with me as their guide or companion.

These are some of my sketches from my Italian art sabbatical- abstract cyprus trees, artichoke, olive tree, waterfalls, fire, enchanted woods… stormy weather that eventually led to the arrival of spring…

VK: In walking around your studio, I notice your sketches have a lot of words on them as well. Why do you incorporate text and image (on your sketches)?
JJLJ: What I went through in Italy was intense – good, but challenging – and, I wanted to remember specific moments. The text allows me to remember the experience. I felt it was important to anchor what I was thinking – the sketch is so quick, that it doesn’t hold the weight that the paintings do.
VK: So, in Italy was when you really embraced making watercolors.
JJLJ: I did break down in Cortona and buy acrylic and paintbrushes – it was incredible reading the colors in Italian to the shop keeper and though my pronunciation was definitely not superb, it was fun picking them out. He understood what I was saying. Obviously when it comes to art, everyone speaks a very familiar language.

Some of my very first paint brushes from my first year in college are in this pic. And some cotton. I LOVE cotton. I want a huge arrangement of it.

VK: Other than music and travel, where do you find inspiration?
JJLJ: Nature. And my emotions. Ranging from delight to heartbreak and combined with my attempts to understand the world around me, this seemingly personal journey, the learning of life lessons – which is our life lesson – is evident in nature. If you look at my images, you’ll find a diverse array of flora and fauna that must be sifted through in order to discover the essential truth that it is the journey that is most important.
VK: How do you keep yourself motivated, organized?
JJLJ: I’m sure on some level, I am organized even though I don’t feel it. I have timelines that keep me motivated and on task with my goals. (Laughing) Birthdays help too – My most recent birthday was good at making me get organized – pushing me to get to the place that I want to be.

My work tables have become works of art themselves.

VK: What’s the best advice you’ve received from a mentor? Or, what advice would you give?
JJLJ: One of my instructors always encouraged us to take our ideas and do thorough research on what has been done prior and then, take it further. My advice: Follow your heart and listen to yourself. This is the key to everything. Take others opinions with a grain of salt – you must remain authentic.
VK: If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
JJLJ: Just one? (She laughs) That’s a really good question. Maybe fly? I need a bit more time with that one. All the superpowers are such a control thing – I don’t necessarily want to read peoples minds or stop time – I just want to let go. Having a superpower would take away the mystery of things.

Ah yes, my crunchy painting apron. It tends to fascinate people when they see how thick the paint is in person.

Installation Shots & Summer Update

Thanks to those of you in the Atlanta area that made it out to our Folsom Jones studio exhibition last month. We are hoping to have more events coming up in the area and will be sure to keep everyone posted.

It's summer and it's a hot one! I've been keeping pretty busy and cool in the studio. Currently underway is a new commission for the Northside Hospital lobby. I've also just received another commission for a private collection in Dallas, so I'm very pleased about all of this. New paintings are also in the works to send out to my galleries soon. August should be a great month for the debut of a few of these fresh works!

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer thus far. Many folks are traveling and getting in their summer vacations with the families. Once I can get a few of these pieces completed in the studio I'll be heading off on a few adventures myself. Much needed, I can tell you.

Coming up this fall are several group shows I'll be getting ready for in Chicago, Santa Fe and Pone Vedra Beach. All dates and info will be shared once we've thoroughly enjoyed our summer time.

For now, I leave you with a couple of snapshots of "Samsara II" I received last night from my new collectors in Boston. One of the things that always pleases me is to see images of my paintings hanging in their new homes and collections.

My good friend, writer Vene Franco has her new blog up and rolling. It's called Unsweetened. I encourage everyone to check it out and follow her posts... she took a little hiatus from blogging for a bit and her fans are more than pleased that she's "back" now! Congrats, Vene!

Netherlands Artist Brit Hammer is working on a couple of new books and I'm excited and pleased to have been asked to participate in one of them! Brit's book will be out 11-11-11 and I will be sharing more news about that this fall. Thank you so much, Brit for including me on this wonderful project!

My congratulations going out to Fay Gold for all of her latest events and news! Fay has a bundle of exciting endeavors that continue to unfold and I'm looking forward to visiting the new space at the Westside Arts District.

Hello, successful sweet summer

I'm back from Santa Fe and have to say that the show was a big success! A fantastic turn out (best I've had in six years at Hunter Kirkland Contemporary) and the exhibition looked gorgeous! I'm so grateful to my gallery, new collectors, existing collectors, clients, family, friends and new friends and fans! What a wonderful, magical weekend. I say this every year, and I mean it: Santa Fe truly is a place NOT to miss. My show will be up until June 12th, so those of you in the Santa Fe area, I encourage you to stop in! Memorial Day weekend is always a celebrated weekend... it is my goodbye to spring and hello to summer. Oh what a sweet southern summer it will be. Hopefully a successful sweet summer. I'm ready to get back into the studio and create more beauty.

Rising Artists!

Yesterday I was a visiting artist for the first time at a high school. While many of the Advanced Portfolio seniors were already gone for the school year... there were a few juniors who were already in the advanced art courses and really made a difference in my experience as a guest. I want to thank Mrs. Johnson for inviting me to try and share my work and knowledge as a full time artist with your classes. I really do hope I was able to make a positive impression and inspire at least a few of your kids. (Mrs. J, you are doing an AMAZING job as a teacher... I was worn out after four classes and can only imagine the strength you must have over the past ten years. Congratulations, btw!)

Special thanks to my sister in law (Shelly), my nephew (Matt), Jessica Hedgepeth, Spencer Grady, Austin Winter, Hannah Merritt, and Wendy Adams. Jessica and Hannah, I really appreciate your openness and wonderful energy and sharing this artwork with me... I was really happy you agreed to let me take these photos and share on my blog. Last year I was invited to be a guest artist at my nephew's high school. My schedule has been such that it kept getting pushed back and back and back... until finally, the kids are almost out of school! Time to get my butt up to Knoxville and see what kind of inspiration I can hopefully offer to these rising artists. I'm looking forward to this opportunity... and I'd like to share this with all of you as well.

We always look forward to seeing what Jennifer J.L. Jones has added to her evolving oeuvre, and this year is no exception. For her new series “Serenata,” which will be on display at the gallery from May 27 through June 12, she uses a richer palette than ever before, addressing ideas and emotions that are at once personal and universal. It’s as if she’s inviting us to journey with her into her inner world of contemplation but also to explore the all-encompassing realm of nature. The unique way she combines the two gives this work a particular urgency, which contrasts intriguingly with her paintings’ serene beauty. Jones continues to abstract her observations from nature while mining her own emotional life for inspiration, most recently drawing ideas from a working trip to Tuscany where she experienced the transition from winter to spring.

“My work has to do with nature, energy, seasons, and emotions,” says the artist, “and Italy has had a profound effect on this series. My time there showed me what a major role the weather patterns and seasons continue to play in my painting. The ideas I’ve been working on for this series have been taken directly from my experience in the Tuscan countryside, where I witnessed all the enchanting nuances of living on top of a mountain. My sketches for the series range from brooding, moody, pre-spring storms to the abundant rain and the intense green grass of the hillsides, with blips of white sheep, colorful tulips, and daffodils.”

Jones has refined her technique over the years, using less of the ridged papers and natural elements like leaves that gave her past work texture in favor of glazing thin layers of oil paint, acrylic, and tar, then sanding them until the desired effect is achieved. At first glance the surfaces appear heavily lacquered, almost to the point of impenetrability, but closer examination reveals a textured world of activity beneath the surface, the layering process subtly but powerfully highlighting an abstracted universe of natural elements and the feelings they evoke. The deeper palette of greens, browns, and clarets is deceptive as well, as the pops of light and color that animate the background introduce a sense of playfulness and optimism, of a lightness of spirit that’s grounded by, rather than immersed in, the darkness.

Abstract expressionist Jennifer Jones’s latest series, “Serenata,” uses mixed media on wood panels to chronicle her ongoing journey of self-discovery. Jones continues to refine her creative process, glazing thin layers of oil paint, acrylics, and tar to produce richly colored, heavily lacquered surfaces that reveal deeply embedded textures, as if fragments of memory were preserved and polished, then combined with elements of the natural world. Although personal, the subject matter references processes like growth, decay, and rebirth, reinforcing a universality that elevates her work to a level of communication that transcends boundaries between self and other.

“My paintings are my love songs, my poems, and my novels,” explains the artist. “They are my mysteries, my questions, and my answers; they are even my confusion, my heartbreaks, and my bliss. Through painting, I have discovered a ‘visual’ voice for my heart that has evolved into a serenade for my soul.”

Jones will be on hand for the opening reception on Friday, May 27, to discuss the techniques and inspiration that give life to her palette of rich colors and dark yet accessible surfaces.

The show continues through June 12, 2011.

Blog Bragging about John Folsom: Summering at the End of Empire

In an interview earlier this week, I was asked what kind of people attract me lately...

My answer is people who are full of light and life and are following their passion. Not to say I'm not close with people still finding their passion, but the people I'm immediately attracted to are those who know what they want out of life and are in the process of making it happen. There is a confidence there that is unmistaken. And I think it's safe to say we are all attracted to that innate quality, aren't we?

As far as artists go, I'm attracted to those that take viewers on a journey. We learn as they learn and we gain insight when there is growth in their work.

John's newest pieces that I was really drawn to

One such artist is John Folsom. If anyone here has been reading my blog on any regular basis or knows me personally, then you know I've been exhibiting my work with John for a few years now. We are good friends and contemporaries, and I've always been a huge fan of his work. I'm excited to say he has yet another Museum Exhibition under his belt! Congratulations, FO!!!!

My favorite piece in the show

Two weeks ago tonight, John's Marietta Art Museum show opened. That was the night I returned from Italy and as much as I wanted to drive straight from the airport to attend the opening event, I was completely spent. The great thing about having a personal "in" with the artist is a private tour! I met up with John yesterday to see his show and talk with him about his latest body of works in 'Summering at the End of Empire'. I hope those of you in the local Atlanta area will be able to go see his show in person. It's fantastico! I'm blog-bragging here and sharing a few snapshots of the show that John has generously given me permission to post.

Spring Update

Now that I'm settled back in from my month in Italia, I've gone to my studio a few times and the paint is making me happy. I had a totally uninhibited paint day yesterday. No editing or thinking about what should happen next. It was messy and when I was done it was the perfect under layering that needed to happen for one of my new larger paintings. Now I'm up early looking at my calendar and lists of things that need to happen over the next few weeks. I'm excited to finish up these paintings for my upcoming solo exhibition at Hunter Kirkland Contemporary at the end of next month. They are beauties to be sure. Mark your calendars for Memorial Day weekend!

Other news and tidbits to update you on would be that I've been invited to have my work in two books and while it's a bit premature to announce anything here just yet, I'm pretty excited and honored to have been selected. I also did an interview while I was in Italy regarding my new series of paintings, Serenata. This body of work is spanning the entire year of 2011, so this first segment of the series is what will be debuting out in Santa Fe, New Mexico on May 27th.

In the studio I have a couple of new commissions started... and my work has recently been included in a few new private collections out in Illinois, Oregon and the Kalanipu'u Marriott in Hawaii. All blessings and I'm so grateful!

Other than this... things are quiet and it's a good thing for now. I need the next three weeks in the studio to concentrate and be free from anything but the now. A concept I finally understand.

I've been saying "holy smokes" a lot lately. I think that's a funny expression and have no idea who or where I picked it up from. Alas, 2011 is off to a busy start! As is typical of me, it's hard to believe time is moving so quickly that it's already March! Here are the latest collection of news blips and tidbits to share. My year has begun with my new Serenata series in progress. This is the first series that will span the length of one year of studio concentration. In late January, my painting, "Patience" was included in the Palm Beach Art Fair in Florida. Fay Gold and Moussad Besharat were my representives at the event. It was great exposure and I'm pleased to have had my work included. Thank you Moussad and Fay! I've been receiving some comments on this painting of "Patience" from a few of you recently and just to let you know, it is now on its way out to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Some of you may already know that my work is included in the Harpo Studio collection of Oprah. I was recently told that my painting, "Verdant Meditation" has been in at least one of the Behind The Scenes episodes on the new OWN network. I love that the work in that collection is getting some on air exposure! Thank you, Harpo! (I love that harpo is oprah spelled backward. I once thought about spelling my name backward too and calling my studio Senoj. Maybe I still will.)

Speaking of studios, at the recent R.A.D. event in Avondale Estates, I opened my studio door at Little Tree Studios for part of the day and let people take a peek into my working studio. Many of you know this is a rare thing for me to do, so I'm glad a few people stopped by and enjoyed it.

I'm happy to say that the galleries are all starting to see an increase in traffic and a few of my paintings have recently been placed in new collections. Always makes my heart feel good to know this. Special thanks to my galleries, designers and consultants who have been placing my work!!! I love my partnerships with all of you! Thank you! Thank you!

Soon I'm off to Italy to stay at the Podere Palazzo in Tuscany. I have been mentioning it in tweets here and there (I dumped my twitter account though so I'm no longer tweeting, people) and blogged about it a couple of times already... and most recently have been journaling non stop about it. This is the place I'll be enjoying and creating. I feel so blessed to be able to take this trip. I'll be keeping everyone updated and will look forward to sharing more with you again soon! The following is a set of interview Q's sent to me by one of my previous galleries... I was a little bit surprised at how long it took me to answer as I felt a bit shy. I don't consider myself a shy person, so perhaps it was just my mood at the time. Anyway, I thought I'd share it here with all of you, dear readers...

Hope the first week of your new year has been treating you RIGHT!

Tell us about your background. Where did you grow-up? Your family?

I'm the youngest of five and grew up in rural Virginia until I was 10 and then moved to the central east coast of Florida until I was 18, and have lived all over the U.S. since then. My family is full of creatives and adventurers... my parents are both pilots so we traveled a lot. My family is now spread out throughout the states and my parents live full time aboard their sailboat and sometimes even sail in for my art openings!

How did your background influence your career?

We always lived along the water and in beautiful low-populated places and had the fortune to fly often, so it was incredibly inspiring. My parents taught us to shoot, sail, ski, canoe, scuba dive, etc. early on so I was raised with a lot of freedom and important experiences. Growing up in the country and being around such rich environments gave me the confidence to realize at an early age I could do whatever I put my mind to. When I was just about 13, my parents got rid of our television and instead of staring at the blank space where the t.v. had been, I used that time to work on my art portfolio. Once Yale reviewed it for an AP credit, I was ready for art college. The decisions my parents made raising me undoubtedly contributed to who and where I am today.

At what age did you become curious about art?

As early as I can recall. From preschool on it just came naturally to me; I was always creating something and winning awards. I knew by the time I got to high school that I wanted to make art my career.

What inspires you? How do you stay inspired?

Nature, energy and the world around me. Traveling. People. Love. Everything that I'm open to becomes an inspiration of some kind. I particularly feel inspired continuously by the natural elements around me, the seasons, the weather, and my personal experiences that need to sometimes be translated into visual voice. I stay inspired by being aware and surrounding myself as much as possible.

What is your artistic philosophy?

Find beauty in everything and do your best to put beauty back out into the world as much as possible.

What do you need around you while you are working in the studio?

Music and natural light. But more importantly than what is around me, is what kind of energy is inside me. I need to be centered and bring the right mindset into my studio and the work itself to feel and create my best.

What artist(s) has (have) had the biggest influence on your work?

It's changed over the years. In high school it was Bosch and Titian. In college it was Rauschenberg, Kiefer and Motherwell. Over the years in developing my own style, I've steered away from trying to be influenced by other artists works to try and find my own unique voice.

What do you most enjoy doing while you are not working?

I love hiking and being in/around nature. If I can find a lake to sit next to and meditate, all is right with the world for me. Traveling excites and rejuvenates my spirit and sometimes just catching a movie and shopping or dinner and drinks with friends hits the spot.

What is your favorite traveling experience?

I'd have to say the five months I backpacked around Europe after college. It brought me to Italy and is a place that stole my heart. I'm actually planning another trip next spring to have a new experience there.

If you weren’t an artist – what would you be?

Perhaps a writer... or a film director. I honestly can't see myself doing anything outside of the arts.

Happy New Year Gratitude

They say that change is inevitable. And if we can't change the world, then we should change ourselves. The past year has been one of change for me. For many people I know. So many changes and challenges become bridges to something new and sometimes being forced is the only way to move forward and by moving forward we learn and (hopefully) reinvent better versions of ourselves. New goals, new ideals, new perspectives. The economy and world events have certainly not been shy to shake all of us up. Natural disasters to political maneuvers and meltdowns and yet somehow we still make time for facebook and fascinate at the celebrities whose lives are sometimes sad, but yet offer entertainment to some.

As someone who has never been interested in mob mentality and shied away from popular things as soon as they became fads, I have taken back my time..., I've done away with facebook trying to make more room in my life for things that truly count and matter. Not just for the moment, but long term. I've been blessed with a talent I've always enjoyed and never taken for granted. Even during 9/11 my art served as a healing outlet for many and to my good fortune in the middle of many misfortunes at the time, my art sold better than ever.

I realize that my work is meant to heal. To provide something comforting to those it attracts. All of that comes from me and as the saying goes "if mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy". Or something like that. Well, with all the changes over the past year, I've realized I can be happier. And I want that to be reflected in my work. I'm grateful for the friends and loved ones who have shown their true colors and have remained supportive. And these are the people I want in my life. Quality over quantity.

To celebrate the new direction, I'm teaming up with several good friends and contemporaries including artist, John Folsom and art consultant, Veronica Kessenich. The Atlanta art scene is in question and we are determined to push forward and will be working with many designers, various galleries and others to find a place where our work can be viewed, appreciated, and collected.

My new series "Serenata" begins for the new year of 2011. It will lead me to a month in Italy and back again. It will be a year of living life fully and passionately.

So to 2011, I say, "YOU are most welcome!"

I hope the new year will bring renewed hope and passions and joy into your lives and that all the things that make you feel alive and free and loved will be at your beck and call. We all deserve it. So let's live it!

From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you all for your incredible support. There are times I think noone is looking and out of the blue I'll receive an email that expresses how my artwork has somehow made a positive difference in someone else's life. That is a blessing and I will continue to be grateful.

End of the year catch up on news & events

It's the last day of 2010! How ever did New Years Eve arrive so quickly? The past few months have flown by with a quick blink of an eye ..... and so without further ado, posted below are some photos with snippets to share some of what has been keeping me so busy.

October 1st was a great success at my two-person exhibition opening with Laura Shubert at Stellers Gallery in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. My series "Earthshine" was well received and I want to thank everyone for their support! Here I am with Laura and the gallery owner, Hillary Tuttle.

Special thanks to the Liotta family for being such incredible patrons and supporters of my work! I really enjoy getting to know my collectors!

I was very fortunate to have my friends and family with me for this event. We were able to stay at a friend's beach house (thank you, Rodney and Michi!) and also had the pleasure of dining with clients and collectors after the show. Thank you all for helping to celebrate and special thanks to Stellers Gallery for always treating me like a celebrity! It didn't hurt that Wolf Gang Puck's best friend made a feast for all of us! What luxury!

Two weeks later it was off to Savannah, Georgia to celebrate at the opening of my group exhibition. I had several pieces that were selected for this event. This exhibition filled the mansion and was curated by art consultant Cindy Szczecinski. Thanks, Cindy, for introducing my work to your Savannah clientele!

I was fortunate to have several of my friends and collectors in Savannah attend the opening event. We even tried out our face-time with our iPhones to share the event with those that couldn't make it. Thank you, Victor Pisano for always being such a great, wise friend to me and fellow artisan!

Visiting my parents while they were docked in St. Mary's, GA was a nice side-trip. This photo above is of my dear friend, Laura with my Mum. (I think Laura now has crew privileges aboard the sailboat. Thanks, Laura for being such a great friend to me!)

My parents always try to make it to all of my shows. As long as they can sail in for it! :) Thank you mum and papa for absolutely all your love and support!

During the same time as the Savannah show, Hunter Kirkland Contemporary in Santa Fe, NM also had a group exhibition including some of my most recent works. Thank you, Nancy for another wonderful year. I can't wait for our next show!

Right after that, West Elm, in Jacksonville, FL featured my work exclusively for a special event they held on October 28th. It's an honor to be celebrated and recognized for my work! Thank you, West Elm!

In the beginning of November, I was commissioned to create three five by ten foot paintings for the lobby of the McClean Hilton in Washington, D.C. I worked non-stop to make this happen before Christmas. I'm very proud of these pieces which I finally completed on December 20th. Thank you, to one of my biggest fans/friends/designers for making this happen! This is a wide-angle shot of all three in my studio before being picked up for shipping. Thank you, Robert Hill for all of your great photography of my work!

And last, but not least, my work was selected by Cindy Davis of Luxury Lifestyles Design for the Callanwolde Christmas Showhouse. Twelve of my recent paintings were installed in the Master Suite and I'm pleased that they were so well received! Thank you, Cindy!

And thanks to all of you for your continued support! I have a lot of exciting things planned for 2011 and am very much looking forward to sharing all of it with you throughout the new year!I hope this belated catch up post finds all of you well!

Greetings! I hope this post finds everyone well after the holiday weekend. I am embarrassingly delayed on my posts here re: catching everyone up on recent events and news over the past two months, but that will all come later this week after I post this invite as time is of the essence!

Next weekend, the Little Tree Gallery and Studios (where I have my two studios) will be holding its annual Holiday Art Show and Sale. This is the first time I will be participating as I am now a "free agent" in Atlanta (i.e. non-exclusive with any local gallery) and can show and sell my work direct from my studio. You can take a peek at the large commissioned art works I have in progress in one studio as well as choose on purchasing something from my new paintings I have available for your collection in the other. Unbelievable how busy things have gotten! Just back from one show and getting ready for two more and beginning my new 'Serenata' series while trying to figure out why Comcast has blocked my IP and black listed my account. This is not a fun thing... and it all started because I sent out too many invitations via email for my art show. I just want some decent help to get things resolved while not pulling all of my hair out. I also have taxes to get finished by next week. I am definitely busy and many of you have been asking where I've been... so that should give you a little insight. Nevertheless, I'm feeling great and the autumn air and beautiful skies are helping.

In the middle of all this flurry and hurry, I wanted to send a note of thanks again out to all of my fans, friends, collectors, family and clients. There are moments that bring me clarity and fill me with gratitude... I get so caught up in the busy-ness of life and work and keeping up with details and dreams that it's easy to lose perspective. Thankfully the moments of gratitude come frequently throughout each day for me... I feel so blessed to be able to create from my heart and share my work with all of you and that it is so appreciated by viewers. Thank you! Thank you!

Tonight I'll be attending artist John Folsom's opening at Pryor Fine Art. I'm not just a friend and contemporary of John's but a HUGE fan of his work. I can't say enough great things and I hope those of you in the area will all come out to check out his show and show your support! My next series is just underway entitled "Serenata". (More on the background for that exciting series coming in another post soon!)

In the meantime, I've posted images of two more of my latest paintings. The one above is "Patience" and "Apex", below, is currently at Stellers Gallery in Ponte Vedra Beach. This is my personal favorite from the series... This show opened last Friday night and has already received a lot of attention! In any case, I'm very proud of my new works and hope those of you in New Mexico will enjoy seeing my newest paintings in person and make the most of the evening in such a great southwestern city. A peek inside the Studio

So... just before my newly purchased iPhone 4 completely crapped out on me yesterday (an error message saying "no SIM card detected" (??)... I was able to take a few snap shots with it in my studio. I'm hoping Apple will help me out by fixing or replacing my phone this afternoon. Hope is a lovely thing, isn't it?

Anyway, the photos were from the huge photo session at my studio yesterday... I just wanted to give everyone a "peek" into the studio during one of the professional shoots by Robert Hill. A shout out to you, Rob, for all your hard work- thank you!

Five or six more paintings to finish before the Earthshine series is officially completed! They are all beauties and I'm looking forward to sharing images of them with you on my updated website soon. Yes, it really is going to happen... :)

"Chiyu" donation for Auction at Stellers Gallery October 1st

"Chiyu" is the Japanese word meaning healing/recovery. I thought this would be an appropriate title for this piece given that it was created with the idea of donating it and auctioning it off for breast cancer awareness. My mother is a breast cancer survivor and this is one of many paintings I have donated over the years to support breast cancer research and awareness; this is the second painting I've created specifically as a donation.

There is also a great little story behind this painting as well... Originally it was a painting entitled "Red Luminary" that I shipped to Lisbon, Portugal for an exhibition in 2006. This particular gallery ended up closing and the owner didn't bother to contact me or let me know... it took me over a year to get someone to find him, I hired a lawyer that "duped me" and I had to get numerous attorneys to assist me and eventually the U.S. Embassy became involved in order to get the painting returned from the gallery owner. Once the painting was recovered, it was locked up in a safe at the embassy until I could make arrangements to ship it back to the states. While they do have shipping companies abroad, they unfortunately don't have "pack and ship" companies. This put me in a predicament and the only thing left to do was to fly to Portugal and pack up my paintings myself. I flew to Lisbon and had an incredible journey... and long story cut short, that is how one of my paintings ended up in the Embassy's permanent collection. If it weren't for the strings pulled by my attorney here in Atlanta as well as the Embassy's assistance, this painting would not have been available for me to rework and turn into something entirely new and different this summer. I see this painting as a survivor! And I think it's appropriate to name it "Chiyu".

Chiyu's retail value is $3600. I hope we will be able to see at least that amount from the upcoming auction at Stellers Gallery. It's going toward a great cause and I hope some of you out there (even long distance) will consider bidding on this piece. For those of you wondering where I've been... no worries! Yes, I've been M.I.A., but I'm very much alive and doing well. I may not be on Facebook anymore, but that doesn't mean life has stopped! In fact, the longer I've been away from that social online networking scene, the more time I've had to be productive in other ways. Namely, painting! So that's where I've been... hard at work in the studio, getting ready for my upcoming exhibitions. . .

The image above is just an example of a few of the smallest pieces in the new series. My new series "Earthshine" is one of the largest bodies of works to date... it's not completed quite yet, but getting there in a hurry. That's a good thing because it's due to debut in a few short weeks at several different national gallery locations: October 1st at Stellers Gallery, (in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida), October 15th at Hunter Kirkland Contemporary (in Santa Fe, New Mexico), and October 16th at the Cindy Szczecinski curated exhibition space (in Savannah, Georgia). I have a busy two weeks coming up to be sure to get things wrapped up, but looking forward to sharing all of this new work with you all SOON!

"Ever"

The first completed painting from this new series is "Ever" (60"x60") and is on exhibit and available at Pryor Fine Art in Atlanta, Georgia. It will be featured this Friday night (September 17th) as Pryor Fine Art celebrates its 20 year anniversary and the opening reception for the the owner, artist, Susie Pryor. The reception is from 6-8p.m. and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

I'll be posting again soon... I need to share an image of "Chiyu",one of my new paintings that I've donated to be auctioned off on October 1st at Stellers Gallery to benefit Breast Cancer Awareness and Research. I'd love to get everyone on board to help support such an important cause!

Stellers Gallery Exhibition: October 1, 2010

Fall is on the heels of summer and I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend! I spent most of my time in the studio getting my work ready for the upcoming October 1st exhibition at Stellers Gallery in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. As the days of September quickly pass, I'm making sure they are each filled with as much painting as possible. I'm excited about the new work in my "Earthshine" series and will be sending paintings from this new series out to Hunter Kirkland Contemporary in Santa Fe as well as a few selected pieces in the curated exhibition coming up in Savannah, Georgia on October 16th. These images will also be included online when my new website launches!! Very excited about that... a few delays because I've spent more time in the studio then on the computer, but it will be worth the wait... I promise!

I have lots more work to do between now an then, so I must make this post brief... I just wanted to post something short and sweet to express my appreciation for all of the incredible support from my friends & family, clients & collectors, galleries & fans. . . You all show me on a regular basis how much my artwork means to you and it fills me with endless inspiration. I feel incredibly grateful and blessed! My sincere thanks to you and all best wishes...

Spring Interview

In mid-March, I was interviewed in my studio by Susan Moreno. The interview has been published online through several organizations Susan is involved with and most recently, the Women's Caucus for Art of Georgia published it in their August 2010 newsletter. Things have definitely sped up and kept me busy since spring... lots of commissioned work and successful events. I'm feeling incredibly blessed.

I've heard mention that several artists have found this interview helpful already ... so I'm hoping to expand on more of these stories along with a great deal more in the book I am supposed to be working on! Stellers Gallery of Ponte Vedra will exhibit the work of nationally-recognized painters Laura Lacambra Shubert and Jennifer J.L. Jones, during the upcoming exhibit Two Women to be held on Friday, October 1 from 5 pm. until 8 pm. The opening will be held at Stellers Gallery at Ponte Vedra, 240 A1A North, Ste. 13 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. According to gallery owner Hillary Tuttle, the exhibit will be dedicated to National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

Proceeds from a portion of the exhibit sales as well as proceeds from two paintings donated for a silent auction will be given to The Donna Foundation. The Donna Foundation raises money to be used in caring for northeast Florida women living with breast cancer.

Additionally, as a thank you to gallery customers who purchase work by either artist during the opening event, Tuttle is hosting an evening with the artists and dinner after the event at Eleven South in Jacksonville Beach, FL. According to Tuttle, both artists strive to capture the beauty of our everyday surroundings. "For Jennifer, inspiration for her paintings may come in the graceful fall of a leaf in autumn. For Laura, the pattern of early morning sunlight on a breakfast table might be what stops her in her tracks," said Tuttle. "However, both artists have the same goal in mind with their paintings, to communicate with the viewer and to bring to their attention the beauty of some small facet of everyday living," she said.

"The artists employ very different materials and have different surfaces with brushwork and content. When hung together, instead of fighting with each other, the paintings complement each other and bring out the unique strengths of each painting," said Tuttle. "We find that many collectors of one artist will acquire the work by the other. The paintings not only hang beautifully together in the gallery, but in the home and office setting."

Shubert and Jones each have work that is widely collected and displayed at galleries, museums and private collections. Stellers Gallery at Ponte Vedra has represented Shubert since 2002 and Jones since 2004. "We are very excited to bring Laura and Jennifer together at the gallery and we're honored to host them in person during the opening. The work will hang in the gallery through October," said Tuttle.

According to Jones, her work is inspired by the seasons, weather patterns, and natural elements, to name a few. "From a pocket of air trapped in ice to the burnt edges on a flower in the hot summer to millions of crushed shells in the form of sand along the beach, the inspiration found in nature for my art seems endless," said Jones. "Beauty is everywhere and as an artist I interpret that beauty, trying to integrate my personal style, and put it out there for people to connect with. My work is part a spiritual search. It is a need to express what sometimes can only be felt; to create an experience unique to each individual," she said.

"As I paint, each studio session becomes a form of meditation. My work is an intuitive process. The paint often dictates the final imagery and I allow this to be my guide. The colors I choose to glaze over one another create mood, atmosphere, and a 'vibration' of energy unique to each viewer interacting with the final piece," said Jones.

Most recently, Jones' credits include her art as part of the permanent art collection at the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon, Portugal and the Atlanta Botanical Garden in Georgia. Also, her latest solo exhibits include galleries in Santa Fe, New Mexico and in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. Her work is collected throughout the world and owned by noted collectors including Oprah Winfrey and Judith Belushi Pisano. Throughout her career, Jennifer's paintings have been exhibited in select galleries located in the U.S. and abroad. One of her paintings entitled "Five Elements", provided inspiration for the $75 million Tucker-Sadler designed, 44 Monroe residential high-rise in Phoenix, Az.

The work of Jennifer J.L. Jones explores the many fundamental qualities of nature and the idea of energy and beauty through color, texture and the influence of nature. With her refined combination of mediums such as asphalt, oil paint, and multi-layering with various glazes, her work evokes emotions, thoughts, and universal connecting points in the observer.

Jones received her B.F.A. from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1994. She currently lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia as a self-employed artist. Her work is highly-collected and published throughout the world.

According to Shubert, her work is dominated by studies of figures. "The viewer will see that I paint torsos beginning at the neck, ending above the knees or at the foot. This enables me to integrate figures into my work as patterns of colors, textures and shapes," Shubert said. "My subjects are treated with functional anonymity, yet are true and accurate. The paintings convey a sense of well being, of the good life and of deep and quiet pleasures," she said.

Laura Lacambra Shubert, daughter of a Basque father and American mother, grew up in Florida and Spain and chose art as a career at an early age. She studied painting, drawing, and printmaking at Southern Methodist University, where she received her B.F.A. in 1986.

After studying painting at Academie Port Royal, in Paris, France, Shubert returned to the United States where she began exhibiting in solo and group shows across the country. In 2000, she was named a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in London, England. Her work can be found in private and corporate collections in the United States and abroad. Shubert resides in Winter Park, Fla.

In my wonderful journey as an artist, I've met many unique and creative people from all around the world... including the talented and diverse group of artists I was fortunate to know and be close friends with at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. One of these incredible artists is my dear friend, renowned artist, Doug Fogelson. Doug has had a positive affect on so many individuals throughout his involvement in the arts... he is in the midst of an exploding career on the rise and it pleases me to no end to see he is receiving such high praise and international notoriety for his work (including his publishing efforts and many noted collaborations.) He has become quite an inspiration to me over the past years as I've seen no break in his growth, focus and determination as he continues pushing boundaries through his work. It fills my heart with pure joy to know that he is being recognized and enjoying his well deserved success!

Recently, Doug sent out a request to his many friends throughout the U.S. to assist him on a project he was working on for his solo exhibition called "Field Work", which is about the magic embedded in the familiar and aims to discover anew certain profound aspects of life. All we had to do was send him two cups of dirt from where we lived and I was one of the luckies to be of assistance! As a painter, my life is one of mostly solitary studio work, so to participate in something outside of the studio (even as small as digging in the dirt and shipping off via FedEx) was a little bit of fun. Suprisingly to me, the FedEx employee said, "wow! another person asking for GA dirt, huh? You'd be amazed how much dirt we ship!" It was even insured for $100. automatically. I loved every part of being a tiny part of this process.

“Field Work” begins with the dirt itself. The rudimentary “ground zero” of here is the culmination of thousands of years of decay and erosion. Depending on location it takes approximately five hundred to one thousand years to create just one inch of topsoil. An important part of my exhibition will be exposing the soil directly to 8x10 inch transparency film to create vibrant color photograms of this substance. The resulting large abstracted prints immerse the viewer into the pure form comprised of plant, animal, and mineral decay so vital to life on earth."

Summer Update

July is quickly coming to an end... it's been a full, interesting few weeks and I feel extremely blessed for everything. Since my last post in June, I've managed to stay rather busy, which prompted me to finally hire on a couple of temporary assistant/interns. This allowed me a bit of time to begin writing the first few pages of my book, complete a few new beautiful commissioned paintings... here is one image installed...

I've also been making a bit of time to work with my new webmaster for the updating/revamping of my website (hopefully set to launch early August). Unfortunately I've been spending more time than I'd like seeking out the best artist software available (not an easy task), but I balanced that headache out by making plans for upcoming international travel. I need it! (More on that later...)

I was fortunate to enjoy a lovely get away up to Newport, R.I. & Martha's Vineyard to see very dear friends over the 4th and was admittedly a bit sad to come back to Atlanta. The Vineyard just steals a bit more of my heart each time I visit. Sigh....

The beautiful garden we woke up to each morning and drank coffee and talked about life and art and love and everything under the sun... was so relaxing! My gratitude to Jess, Mike & Judy!!

I did manage to return to the studio with inspiration from the trip though and started my new "Earthshine" series, which will debut this coming October at three different locations....

Earthshine is the moon's night side reflected from the surface of the Earth, and to be more specific, the clouds are creating the reflection. In the same way, if we remove ourselves from our own perspective and look at our situations from a different perspective, perhaps we too will see the glow that emanates from the clouds surrounding us. Sometimes even the slightest shift in our perspective can make the biggest difference. The "Earthshine" series represents my journey in seeking the light within the dark; changing perspective to see the greater good and growth at hand; and having the courage to trust the process of looking past shadows to find the light and beauty of inner truth.

...AND last, but not least, I've signed on with Pryor Fine Art Gallery! We have a show already lined up for my work in January, but I'll be getting new work to them in the interim, so no worries, my local-lites!

So, lots and lots of painting going on and to come along with more news and announcements surely to follow over the next few weeks... for now I leave you, my dear readers with best wishes and promises to share as much beauty with you as possible.

I welcome August with an open heart with all the inspiration it wishes to provide as I am ready to push my work to a new level. I hope this quick update finds you all well and enjoying this season to its fullest.

Inspiring a building

It's not every day you find out your artwork has inspired a $70 million, 523,619-square-foot residential high rise in downtown Phoenix. So when I first found out that my painting, "Five Elements", had inspired the exterior and interior design of Arizona's tallest residential structure, 44 Monroe.... I. Was. Thrilled! During my recent visit to Arizona, I couldn't help but put this on my map of places to stop by to see for myself. 44 Monroe is awesome. And since they wouldn't even let me inside the building, I can assure residents that the security is terrific. I'll admit I felt like a rock star while standing in front of the building. Perhaps that's a bit bias, but with due cause. Not only am I flattered, but I am grateful. I can only hope my work continues to inspire...

ARIA: Solo Exhibition at Hunter Kirkland in Santa Fe

It's hard to believe that my ARIA solo exhibition in Santa Fe came and went so quickly! The show ended Sunday, but to me, it feels like it just opened. One of these days I'll figure out where time goes. I have a sneaking suspicion it flies to a beautiful beach in Tahiti and just hangs out. After all, time stands still or at least moves slower in places like that, right? I might have to investigate that in person soon. I'll need a big break after all the work I'll be doing in the studio this summer!

It's incredible how much time, effort, and energy go in to preparing for a show... thankfully all the hard work paid off as it was a huge success and I've been counting my blessings and feeling grateful every day for the good fortune bestowed upon me. To paint for a living is truly a gift and one I vow never to take for granted.

All of my time and experiences in Santa Fe have been positive...This was my fifth year there...and I'm always encouraging people to go check it out. I find it a magical, peaceful place to visit. Of course showing up for the opening is always a celebration and a great opportunity to see old friends, make new friends and share my work with everyone in person. Last year I was proposed to at my opening by a drunk fan... but I'm pretty sure he just wanted a painting. Some people just have different reactions to the work I suppose. The important thing is that he didn't show up to this year's show :) and the new series seemed to resonate with everyone. To know how much my work is increasing its affect on viewers is an exhilarating feeling. I'm happy to

announce that the show ended three paintings shy of sold out... and that has put me on cloud 9! I'm posting a few photos here...

2010 Designer House

I was delighted when interior designer Melissa Armstrong requested to include my painting "Season Epiphany I" in the 2010 Symphony Guild Designer House. The Symphony Guild of Charotte is excited to bring back – after a 2 year hiatus due to the economy – our beloved major fundraising project this coming spring. The 2010 Symphony Guild Designer House will be presented at The MET Terraces, a property that truly speaks to the times and reflects the relevancy required today.

Art Papers 11th Annual Auction

Tomorrow night is the big Art Papers Annual Art Auction at Mason Murer! I'm getting pretty excited about it because I read this morning that ticket sales are up 200% from last year and the fundraising for Art Papers Magazine is definitely on the rise!! Love hearing this news!!

Art Auctions are such a great opportunity for collectors to purchase artwork at a sometimes reduced price... depending on how heavy the bidding wars get of course. I've been to auctions where family members are bidding on the same pieces... upping the price and the frenzy... trying to outbid each other becomes a sport of sorts and it can be pretty entertaining as a bystander. Sometimes it can get pretty dramatic... if one has had their heart set on a particular item and they lose the bidding war... it's not pretty. BUT, the best part is that it's going to a good cause... and the artwork finds a new good home. Overall it's a win-win-win all around by helping with fundraising and of course the collectors end up with artwork they've more or less "worked for" in order to to obtain it. It feels good to donate and help out as well.

I just checked the online bidding for the Art Papers Auction tomorrow night and was thrilled to see that there were already several bids for my painting "Mist Flowers V"! I love that there was an option to bid earlier via the internet... Tomorrow night should prove to be a great one... I hope there will be more bids in person as well as absentee bids from afar tomorrow night. I know I am very much looking forward to seeing you all there if you can make it!!

Fay Gold had a meeting with Massoud Besharat at his gallery, located in a renovated early 20th century warehouse in the Castleberry Hill arts district. He suggested that she curate an exhibition in his grand 3- story space of the artists whose careers she has impacted by their representation at her former gallery. Fay seized the opportunity for an exhilarating second wind and titled the exhibition “Onward”. The artist’s loyalty and enthusiasm for the project was unanimous. They were eager to reunite, expose the current direction of their work and express how they had moved “onward” in their creative process.

Happy New Year!

I hope this first day of 2010 finds you all rightly celebrated and well rested. I find myself overwhelmed with thoughts of new goals, ideas, and inspired to make the most of a brand new year. One of my many resolutions is to finally catch up from 2009 and keep all of you regularly updated on the exciting news and upcoming events regarding my artwork. Unfortunately I fell behind on this same promise last year, but thankfully, 2009 was full of blessings that kept me happily busy in the studio and with the galleries. With the economy showing some signs of improvement, I'm hopeful that things will continue in a positive direction and that 2010 will be prosperous for us all. January will be a time to begin updating my website at long last and share more news on a regular basis. To begin a bit of catch up, I've attached several images of my latest commissioned paintings proudly installed in their new homes. There are more images from shows and news bits and posts to come and already a few exhibitions and art events lined up through the galleries. Lots of exciting things going on and I look forward to sharing all of this and my new work with everyone in person throughout the new year.

Signs of the Apocalypse/Rapture, a curatorial survey by Front Forty Press offers a provocative look into the current trend of blurring the line between annihilation and bliss euphoria in

contemporary art, thought, and sound on view from July 19 – September 20, 2009 at the Hyde Park Art Center. This dynamic exhibition presents diverse and engaging imagery from more than twenty-five well respected local to international contemporary artists working in a variety of mediums.

The opposing ideas of destruction and transcendence fuels the range of expressions featured in Signs of the Apocalypse/Rapture. At once intensely individual, the cross-selection of works also express larger cultural concerns. Ranging from the religious, scientific, sensual, and didactic, the diverse themes of the exhibition punctuate the relevance and malleability of such topics in contemporary discourse. Atlanta Botanical Garden Collection

Last night I had the pleasure of attending a cocktail party at the Atlanta Botanical Garden to celebrate the opening of their new wing...

Three of my paintings are now permanently installed in the upstairs meeting room of the new Hardin Visitor Center. I'm honored to have my work included in such a beautiful public space and hope those of you who will visit the ABG in the future will let me know what you think of the new pieces!

Don't miss the Atlanta Botanical Garden's public grand opening is this weekend (May 2-3, 11a.m.-4p.m.) View the special exhibition of Henry Moore's monumental sculptures, along with the new Southern Season gardens and the Hardin Vistor Center!

Hello All!

With so much going on ... it's hard to keep up. I've been trying to work on updating my inventory, my website, and my blog for two months, all the while keeping up with work in the studio for commissions and upcoming exhibitions and socializing. It's been a blur of a year to date and now that spring has arrived I'm even more determined to get caught up and keep everyone up to date on what I hope will be a more regular basis. (For my own sanity this is a must!) One of the things that I think is pretty helpful lately is Twitter. Yes, there is that word again! Have you heard? Everyone is "tweeting"... I resisted for awhile...but I've found it helpful to post bits and pieces of news that might not be worthy of a full blog-post ... or if I'm too lazy or tight on time to blog about it. Twitter has in fact become a phenomenon. People are using it for so many reasons now... my meager attempt is just to keep you up to date with things I think are worthy of making mention. Since I have sworn not to waste my time on Facebook again (I know, I know, everyone is on Facebook, but it's an addiction I had to kick), I'm left with this blog, my website and twitter to keep everyone updated and in the know. Of course there is the old fashioned e-mail... which I do send out occasionally, but I figure if people are really curious they will have these options to turn to. . .

If you are on my e-mail list, chances are you've recently received an e-invite to join me on Twitter and you can always sign up at any time through the link on this blog.

I've got a ton of news that will be posted in a few days... including exhibition dates, new work, commissions, new collections and news about gallery representation! I can't wait to share it with all of you and want to express my sincere gratitude for all of your continued support. It's meant so much to me and continues to be a source of great encouragement and inspiration.

Fay Gold Gallery Moving

It was just announced in the AJC on February 26th that Fay Gold will be closing her Miami Circle gallery location on April 1st. I wanted to post something here on my blog to inform everyone (and to put some rumors to rest) and to encourage everyone to come view my exhibition before the show ends on March 28th. http://www.faygoldgallery.com

The following was printed in the Atlanta Journal Constitution on February 26, 2009:

Fay Gold plans to close her gallery, a fixture on the arts scene since 1980, and become a private dealer and art consultant. Lagging sales in a bad economy made overhead costs at her Miami Circle venue unsustainable. A moving sale will be held during regular business hours from March 5 to 28. Fay Gold Gallery will close April 1.

Never a shrinking violet, Gold has no intention of disappearing from the Atlanta art scene.

“I will hold small salon-style receptions in my home as well as mount larger exhibitions at alternative spaces,” she says. “I will also have more time to finish my forthcoming memoir, ‘Basquiat’s Cat.’ “
